For their own beach house, Alesch and Standefer peeled a 1960s shack down to the frame, leaving many of the plywood walls exposed. On the wall of their studio are paintings of the ocean. "We started collecting them on Saturday nights on EBay instead of watching TV," Standefer said. To the EBay buys, Alesch added his own red flourishes. "I'll paint something, legitimately, that needs to be painted, and then I'll have a wet brush," he said. "It's actually a little dangerous: 'What more can I paint?' " Another wet-brush moment: Alesch painted their address on the door.
