The Trade - July 31 Red Sox acquire RHP Jeff Suppan, RHP Brandon Lyon, RHP Anastacio Martinez Pittsburgh Pirates acquire 2B Freddy Sanchez, LHP Mike Gonzalez Did it help? The Red Sox needed depth in their starting rotation and swung a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates for Suppan, who played for Boston from 1995 to 1997, giving up highly-touted second base prospect Freddy Sanchez. The rest of the deal negated part of an earlier trade for reliever Scott Sauerbeck after the Pirates claimed Lyon, who was included in that deal, had a previously undisclosed injury. The Red Sox took Lyon and Martinez back, while giving Gonzalez back to the Pirates organization. The deal never worked out the way Boston had hoped, however, as Suppan went just 3-4 with a 5.57 ERA in 11 regular season games with the Sox. Suppan did not pitch for the Red Sox during the 2003 postseason. Sanchez, meanwhile, developed into an All-Star with the Pirates and Gonzalez, now with the Braves, has developed into one of the better lefthanded relievers in baseball.
