1941 - Rosemary Kennedy Lobotomy Leaves Her Mentally Incapacitated
In 1941, Rosemary Kennedy (standing in left background), the third child and first daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy underwent a lobotomy at age 23 in hopes of curing her violent mood swings. The lobotomy ended up leaving her severely mentally handicapped for the rest of her life. Her verbal skills were severely damaged and her mother considered it a devastating tragedy. Rosemary Kennedy died in 2005 at age 86 in Fort Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson, Wisc.
