A day after losing starting catcher Jason Varitek for a month while he recovered from knee surgery, the Red Sox picked up Lopez from the Baltimore Orioles as a stop-gap solution. While his numbers had been steadily on the decline since he joined the Orioles in 2004, Lopez hit rock-bottom in Boston with a .190 average and zero home runs in 18 games. On Sept. 18, 2006, less than a month after acquiring him, the Sox released Lopez.
