"American Pie" by Don McLean Don McLean's song "American Pie" is open for many interpretations. Although McLean never confirmed the meanings for all of the references made in the song, he has acknowledged that part of it is dedicated to Buddy Holly, referring to "the day the music died" when Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.
