The Trade - July 31 Yankees acquire RHP Esteban Loaiza Chicago White Sox acquire RHP Jose Contreras, cash Did it help? Loaiza was brought in to replace starter Jose Contreras, who was inconsistent in his second season with the Yankees after a successful rookie campaign in New York. Loaiza, a former 21-game winner with the White Sox, struggled in New York going 1-3 and finishing the year in the bullpen. In Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS, Loiaza came into the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with two on and one out. He was able to get Orlando Cabrera to hit into an inning-ending double play. Loaiza remained in the game until the 14th, when he gave up a game-winning walk-off single to David Ortiz. Loiaza did not return to the Yankees the following season, and spent 2005 through 2008 as a journeyman, playing for the Nationals, Athletics, Dodgers and White Sox again. Contreras, meanwhile, developed into a solid starter for Chicago, having his best season in 2005 when the White Sox won the World Series.
