Dr. Joseph Zaientz, a retired dentist, unlocks the door of the tiny Shad Museum located behind a gas station on Route 154 in Higganum where he is the director. The museum building is the site of the Shad Shack run by Bill Maynard who sold the seasonal fish to customers in the 1940s. Dr. Zaientz, who has trouble getting around since a motorcycle accident in the 1980s, only opens the museum on Sunday afternoons during shad season from April 1 through June 15. In the foreground is an original shad boat built by legendary Old Saybrook boat builder, Earl Brockway.
