Staff members of the Beat of the Street newspaper meet at the Charter Oak Cultural Center on a recent Thursday afternoon. The newspaper by and for the homeless was conceived by Donna Berman, bottom right, executive director of the center, and is written and published by a group of homeless and previously homeless writers and photographers and several volunteers from the community. Seated at the table are, clockwise from top right, Linda Prout, volunteer; Antoinette McCrary, volunteer; Berman; Joan Artis, writer; Amy Malick, volunteer; and Harry Mitchell, writer. The group meets twice a week to discuss story ideas and distribution plans. At this meeting they were finalizing plans for their third issue.
