Marie and Robert Hughes of East Hampton submitted this photo, taken in August 2005 during a trip to Alaska. Marie Hughes writes, "The flower was growing all alone on this huge rocky beach on Homer's Spit, Alaska. The seed probably fell onto the beach, found enough soil within all of the rocks to take root, withstood the pedestrian traffic and coastal breezes to grow and bloom. Seeing the delicate strength of this sunflower, I felt it deserved to be preserved forever in a photo."
