Red Sox closer Derek Lowe, despite leading the league in saves in 2000 with 42, fell out of favor as the team's closer in 2001, leaving the team in need of a new closer. The Red Sox turned to Urbina, who had shown success in the role with the Montreal Expos. Urbina saved nine games in 10 opportunities, though the Red Sox missed the playoffs with an 82-79 record. The following season, Urbina saved 40 of 46 games for Boston as the team's full-time closer. He departed in 2003, leaving the Red Sox to attempt a "closer by committee" approach, which proved unsuccessful. Urbina is currently serving a 14-year prison sentence in Venezuela for the attempted murder of five workers on his farm in Caracas in 2005 .
