Gearing up for the Litchfield Jazz Festival: Matt Wilson Quartet plus strings

Hopefully you're getting psyched for the Vijay Iyer Trio and Jimmy Heath, Trombone Shorty and Roy Haynes, Lonnie Smith and Joe Lovano.

But make sure you also hit the Sunday afternoon performance by the Matt Wilson Quartet Plus Strings, featuring the great saxophonist Jeff Lederer, whose recent Albert Ayler-inspired release as a bandleader, Sunwatcher, has been in heavy rotation with me for awhile now. (Wilson plays drums on that one as well.)

NPR has a link where you can download the Wilson Quartet's complete performance from the 2010 Newport Jazz Festival.

Wilson was the Litchfield Jazz Festival's first-ever Artist-in-Residence back in 2010, a role he's been asked to revise this year. (Click here for the complete LJF lineup.)
