Rays Joe Maddon on Rodriguez: "It is not his fault"

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon had this to say Sunday when informed that Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez had resigned before Sunday's game at Tropicana Field:

"He's one of the nicest, most decent men I've met in this game, and it's unfortunate that he has to feel the weight of this whole moment because it's not his fault.

"It's a small fraternity and when that happens, it bothers me. I don't know if it bothers everybody but it bothers me to see that, especially with a guy like him. He's worked so hard to get to this point, gets an opportunity and . . . they were doing so well a couple weeks ago. That's the strange part about it. We just played them down there and they beat us two out of three; they were playing good baseball.

"I've been involved in a situation just like that, where the manager resigns. Things change. That was actually later in the season. We've all got our zits, man. Everybody's got their problems and everybody handles them differently.I would never put myself in somebody else's business; I just know that I like the man a lot and I do wish him well sincerely.

"I would believe that he thinks he's doing them good by doing this. It didn't matter if it was at the end of this series or it was today, I believe he did this for the sake of the team."
