Jon Garland accomplished what he wanted inhis first spring outing for the San Diego Padres Saturday, inducingthe Seattle Mariners to hit groundballs and rely on his defense.
He did that a little too well. In the second inning, he took aone-hopper off the inside of his left knee, setting up the lone runto score off him in the Mariners' 7-4 victory.
Garland gave up a run and two hits in two innings.
Mike Sweeney had four hits including a home run and three RBIs.
It also was the first outing for Mariners starter Ian Snell, whoallowed one run and three hits over two innings.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
