The Mariners' announcements Thursday mean five-time All-Star andcamp longshot Mike Sweeney has likely made the team as apinch-hitter and backup first baseman.

Seattle had signed Garko in February to a $550,000, one-yearcontract with playing-time incentives that could have paid him morethan $1 million. But the Mariners were unimpressed with him in

spring training.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old Sweeney has kept his spring battingaverage well above .500. He has also picked up where he left offlast season by mentoring young players and has been a popularclubhouse leader.
