Local Dog Goes To Hollywood

On the big screen, he's Marmaduke; a Great Dane that causes all sorts of problems for the Southern California family he lives with. But in real life, he lives here in Western Washington and goes by the name Spirit. He lives with his mother/owner Julie Evans in Renton.

Spirit is one of two dogs used in the movie, he got the job after his brother George was cast. The movie's producers called the breeder to see if there were any other dogs that looked like George and Spirit is almost a perfect match.

"They actually used him for all the action scenes in the movie" Evans explains. And there was plenty of action for the dog; everything from dancing to swimming. Evans said the one thing trainers couldn't get Spirit to do was to surf "he wanted to no part of getting on the board and going in the ocean."

Spirit was gone for about nine months shooting the movie, Evans admits she missed him. He helped her get through one of the toughest times in her life. "I lost my house, all my dogs and my cat to a house fire two years ago and it broke my heart" Evans explained. She went on to add "so, I named him spirit to honor their loss and what they meant to me."

The movie just hit theaters last week and Evans has seen it twice "I loved it!" So far, no talk of a sequel but Evans said she's not sure she can be away from him for that long, again. Last time, she missed him so much she adopted his sister Serena.
