Newly discovered amateur video shows 1986 Challenger disaster

Hicksville

New Scientist magazine recently published video of the 1986 space shuttle Challenger disaster. The video was shot by Bob Karman, of Hicksville, New York, who was on vacation in Florida at the time.

The video is thought to be extremely rare. Karman filmed the disastrous launch from the Orlando airport, about 50 miles away.

"After shooting the video, I had a sense that something went wrong but it wasn't until we were on the plane that the pilot confirmed the tragedy," he told New Scientist.
