Seattle man dies after being pulled from water in Ironman event

Triathlete Sean Murphy, 44, of Seattle, has died after being pulled from the swim portion of the Ironman Event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, the Kootenai County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday.

In a statement to the Coeur d’Alene Press, the coroner's office said that Murphy, “was retrieved from Lake Coeur d’Alene during the swim portion of the Ironman Event on Sunday, June 24 … Following resuscitative efforts at the medical tent with transportation to Kootenai Medical Center, the patient was maintained on life support until he expired at 1:07 p.m. on June 26.

“Cause of death is pending an autopsy at Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Ironman spokeswoman Jessica Weidensall forwarded the following statement to Q13 FOX News:

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of an athlete following Ironman Coeur d’Alene. The athlete required medical attention during the swim portion of Sunday’s race and was transported to Kootenai Medical Center where he was treated until Tuesday. The cause of death is unknown at this time. On behalf of all of us in the triathlon community, we mourn his death and send our condolences to his loved ones."
