St. Andrew Frisco United Methodist Church Plans for One-Year Anniversary with Special Guest Pastor Zan Holmes

St. Andrew Frisco UMC has much to celebrate in the coming weeks with a new home for its congregation, located at Pink Elementary, 3650 Overhill Drive, Frisco, 75033, starting August 26; and a one-year anniversary celebration on September 16, featuring one of United Methodist's most influential pastors, the legendary Pastor Zan Wesley Holmes, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church in Dallas.

As a 15-year-old, growing up in Houston, Cowley heard Pastor Holmes preach one summer at a leadership training school in Tyler and thought if he ever lived in Dallas, he would want to attend Holmes' church.  Little did he know that his life journey would lead him to Dallas, and in 1992 he became a member of St. Luke's.  Rev. Cowley quickly found himself enrolling as a seminary student at Southern Methodist University.   Over a period of eight years, he became a candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church, an SMU intern/graduate, an ordained deacon, and an ordained elder all at St. Luke "Community" United Methodist Church in east Dallas.

Rev. Cowley was the last intern that Pastor Holmes mentored prior to his retirement of 28 years as pastor of St. Luke.  When he retired, he gave Rev. Cowley what Cowley considers his most prized possession: the Bible commentaries given to Holmes by his father.

Pastor Zan Wesley Homles, Jr., has been a powerful voice for justice, a mentor of countless ministers and public figures, and the leader of one of the most dynamic congregations in the world.  He was also adjunct professor of preaching at Perkins School of Theology at SMU for 24 years. Known as much for his community activism as his preaching and teaching, Dr. Holmes was elected to the Texas House of Representatives from 1968-1972, while he also served as United Methodist District Superintendent. He is the author of five books and is widely known for his role as narrator and host of the well-known Disciple I Bible Study video series produced by Abingdon Press.  A graduate ofHuston-Tillotson Universityin Austin, Texas, Pastor Holmes has two graduate degrees from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. In 2001 he was recognized as one of the Civil Rights Movement's "Invisible Giants" in the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma, Alabama.   In 2010, the Dallas Independent School District honored him at the groundbreaking ceremonies of the new ZAN WESLEY HOLMES, JR. MIDDLE SCHOOL. He is also a recipient of the Linz Award, among other honors. He and his wife Carrie and their great granddaughter, Savannah, reside in Dallas, Texas, and Los Angeles, California.
