The wife of Bridgeport police officer Sgt. Randy White, killed yesterday, has been diagnosed with cancer.  White was killed yesterday when his patrol car was hit on State Highway 114.

Wise County Sheriff's Office authorities say officers began pursuing Stephen York, 43, on U.S. Highway 287 in Decatur and asked Bridgeport police for assistance.  White was among three officers responding to the call.  The 32 year-old officer pulled over a pickup truck on 114 to prevent the driver from being injured in the oncoming pursuit; White's patrol car, with lights flashing, was behind the pickup when the unit was struck.  The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

The driver of the SUV, Stephen York, 43, was taken to John Peter Smith hospital.  He has been charged with capital murder and is being held in the Wise County Sheriff's Office on $1 million bail.

City officials say White had been a Bridgeport police officer since 2004.

Sgt. White is the first Bridgeport officer to be killed in the line of duty.  He leaves behind a wife, recently diagnosed with cancer, and a small child.
