SAN DIEGO -- Three San Diego area hotels and one restaurant received the coveted AAA five-diamond rating, the Automobile Club of Southern California announced Friday.

The hotels are The Grand Del Mar, The Lodge at Torrey Pines and the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort. Addison at The Grand Del Mar was one of only two restaurants in Southern California to be awarded five diamonds.

Sixteen hotels throughout Southern California were given the top rating.

"The AAA Five Diamond Rating is the prestigious designation in North America for the global hospitality industry,'' said Patricia Marenco, the organization's approved accommodations supervisor. "It represents meticulous personalized attention, world-class service and imaginative menus using the finest ingredients in order to reach the AAA's highest standard of service in travel and dining excellence.

The Grand Del Mar was also rated the top luxury hotel in the United States and fifth-best in the world in voting by users of the website tripadvisor.com.

The hotel, owned by developer and new U-T San Diego newspaper publisher Doug Manchester, was ranked as the second overall location in the country in the tripadvisor rankings, released earlier this week.

Three San Diego establishments made the website's list of trendiest hotels. The W San Diego was third-trendiest in the U.S. and 19th in the world. The Hard Rock San Diego was seventh-trendiest in the country, and the Pearl was 12th.
