Car plunges into pond after crash

VISTA, Calif. -- Emergency crews rescued a man who crashed his car into a pond in Vista , sheriff's lieutenant said.

Gary Walker, 62, hit another vehicle while driving on Shadowridge Drive at Antigua Drive in southwestern Vista around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Clayton Lisk said. The impact sent him off the roadway and  down a 40-foot embankment into a small pond. Walker's car was submerged to the roof, Lisk said.

Walker was able to get out of the partially car through its sunroof. He was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for evaluation, Lisk said.

A helicopter ambulance  assisted in the rescue, the lieutenant said.
