Sexual AssaultChelsea KingJohn Albert Gardner

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said in a press conference Sunday John Albert Gardner has been arrested in the disappearance of Chelsea King. Gardner, 30, is a registered sex offender. According to the CA Sex Offender registry he was convicted of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14.

Gore would not say what specific evidence led them to Gardner. He also said he is holding out hope Chelsea King will be found alive. He said authorities are still sorting out the charges Gardner will be facing. Gore said they are investigating whether Gardner is the same suspect involved in the December attack of a female jogger exercising in the same area where Chelsea went missing. In that incident, the young woman was able to fight off the attacker possibly breaking his nose.

Sheriff Gore said the search for Chelsea King will continue through the night and investigators will look into whether the search should be expanded to other areas.
