SAN DIEGO - Over 100 medical marijuana supporters joined Rep. Bob Filner in Ocean Beach Monday to back the medical use of the drug in the face of a federal government crackdown.

The San Diego Chapter of American for Safe Access rallied at the corner of Newport Avenue and Abbot Street at 2 p.m. and was going to march until 5:30 p.m.

The federal government threatened hundreds of safe access locations in San Diego by shutting them down, causing legitimate patients to go without their doctor recommended medicine, according to the group.

The San Diego ASA intervention was an attempt to teach their community about medical cannabis laws.

Filner, a San Diego mayoral candidate, spoke in support of medical marijuana in the city.
