At La Feria del Nopal, we celebrate the CACTUS plant with a free concert! We also want to showcase its nutritional benefits, significance to current Mexican culture and honor its roots as a food staple in pre-Hispanic Mexican culture. Celebrity Chef Juan Mondragon, of Juan's Restaurante, has created a large cactus-based menu comprised of appetizers, salads, moles, entrees, desserts and beverages. These culinary creations will be available for tasting to all attendees at special discount.

The purpose of the Cactus Fair (La Feria del Nopal) is to educate our community about the cactus -- a noble and nutrient-rich vegetable that is part of the pre-Hispanic culinary tradition in Mexico. Juan's sister was the main inspiration for the Cactus Fair. Juan's sister, Sandy, was diagnosed with cancer. Knowing the health benefits of cactus, it became a staple in her diet. Juan concocted cactus recipes for her sister so that she would not grow tired of eating cactus on a daily basis. As Juan opened his restaurant, he made it his goal to feature cactus on his menu. Juan also made a promise to God that if Sandy got better, he would share the benefits of cactus to everybody.
This event will showcase healthy and tasteful dishes featuring the Nopal cactus. We hope that the event will encourage the Southern Californian community to make use of this traditional food to enrich their meals and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Today, there is a low awareness of pre-Hispanic cuisine in the American culinary landscape; however, it is a significant part of the Mexican tradition, and in particular the cactus. In addition, only a small number of people are aware that cactus can be cooked into very delicious and very healthy dishes.
