Suspect Arrested in Hit-and-Run Death of Irvine Doctor

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) -- Police have arrested a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a well-known Irvine doctor killed while cycling in Newport Beach on Saturday.

Michael Jason Lopez, 39, of Anaheim was arrested around 2 a.m. Tuesday and booked for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

Lopez is being held at the Newport Beach Police Jail on $100,000 bail.

The vehicle believed to have been involved in the accident was also recovered, according to Newport Beach police.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. on Sept. 15 on Newport Coast Drive between Ocean Ridge Drive and Vista Ridge Drive.

Dr. Catherine Campion Ruiz, 57, was riding northbound on Newport Coast Drive with another bicyclist when she was hit from behind by a black pickup truck, police said.

The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Ruiz was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she died from her injuries.
