LOS ANGELES -- Coroner's officials say the doctor known as the so-called "Walking Man" of Silver Lake committed suicide by drowning himself in his hot tub.

Dr. Marc Abrams, a family-practice physician, was known for his daily, shirtless treks through the neighborhood.

The 58-year-old was found dead in a backyard jacuzzi Wednesday along Moreno Drive.

At the time of his death, Abrams was under investigation for prescribing drugs to a 25-year-old patient who died of an overdose, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Dr. Abrams was a well-known fixture in the community because of his daily, 15-mile walks, which he had been doing since the 80s.

He once shared his route with a local reporter, saying, "I usually loop around the lake, and then go down West Silverlake to Rowena, and then Hyperion, and then Griffith Park Blvd. down Sunset, back down Silverlake to the reservoir, and then back and loop around the lake again."

Abrams would often read newspapers along his journey.

He also did some 4,000 push-ups each day.

Abrams was so well-known in the community that he was the subject of a mural at a Silver Lake restaurant on Sunset Boulevard.

On Sunday, hundreds of people walked part of his route to honor Dr. Abrams.
