Four-year-old Jonathan Vasquez has died after being dragged during a hit-and-run incident in Sacramento Monday morning.

The boy was riding a scooter near the intersection of Northgate Boulevard and Wilson Road when a vehicle struck the child and dragged him for an unknown distance. The vehicle was exiting the parking lot of the Smythe Academy School.

The car, which eyewitnesses describe as being a newer dark colored sedan, possibly a Maxima was driven by a male who fled the scene.

Vasquez was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died after suffering critical injuries. The boy's father has been informed of his death, but his mother -- currently vacationing in Mexico -- has not.

Authorities are urging the driver in this incident to come forward for questioning. Anyone with information is urged to contact local authorities at Crime Alert 916-443-HELP. If you are interested in helping the family of the victim you can contact the Smythe School's counseling services at (916) 566-1628.
