A suspect is dead after California Highway Patrol officers opened fire on him following a high-speed freeway chase.

Authorities say the man, whose name has not been released, was unarmed but may have been under the influence of drugs.

CHP spokesman Officer Michael Bradley says officers tried to pull the man over on Interstate 5 for a traffic violation around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, but he instead led them on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph.

When officers tried to corner the suspect off an Elk Grove exit, he allegedly began ramming their patrol cars with his vehicle. Bradley says officers tried using their stun guns before resorting to firearms.

A stretch of southbound I-5 has been closed for several hours as authorities investigate the incident.
