Explosion Causes Power Outages Throughout San Francisco

Around 4,000 PG&E customers lost power and several dozen people were reportedly trapped in elevators throughout San Francisco following an underground power transformer explosion Friday afternoon.

The PG&E equipment located at the intersection of O'Connell and Polk reportedly failed around 11:30 a.m., with reports of power outages beginning shortly thereafter. A shelter had been in placed for those evacuated from nearby businesses due to the smoke, reported San Francisco CNN affiliate KPIX-TV.

The fire was contained around 2:00 p.m. No injuries were reported in association with the explosion.
