Putting to rest the rumors that have been swirling for weeks, Danica Patrick announced on Thursday she is coming to NASCAR.
"The time is now the opportunity is now and I want to do it," said Danica at a press conference in Arizona. "I've truly enjoyed my experience in NASCAR which is why I want to do it full time. I really feel confident that I can been successful in the future."
Patrick says she will run a full Nationwide series for JR Motorsports in 2012 and a part time schedule of 8-12 races for Stewart Haas racing in the Sprint Cup series. GoDaddy.comwill continue to be her sponsor. Patrick says her schedule is not complete yet, so she doesn't know if she will race the 2012 Indy 500.
"It was hard decision of course it was this is a big change," said Patrick. "But in the end it became clear to me how much I enjoy driving these cars and the style of racing."
Over her six seasons in the Indy Car series, Patrick has one win and six podium finishes. She was the 2005 Indy Series Rookie of the year and is a five time winner of the series most popular driver award. But she has been criticised for not finding victory lane more often.
"I feel like as a race car driver I would like to win ever race but that's hard to do," said Patrick. "The Indy Car season is not over yet, so there's still time to do more. I'm very happy very excited I've accomplished a lot."
