The Backstretch Blog: Bowyer on the Backstretch

It's got to be frustrating, Clint Bowyer is having one heck of a Chase for the Championship. The Kansas native has finished in the top 10 in seven of the eight races so far this NASCAR post season, he even has a win. And yet, he is a very long shot for the title at this point, 36 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson, third in the standings.

"It’s just unbelievable,” Bowyer said. “You keep having these top-10 runs, flirting with the top five week in and week out, and, unless you’re winning these races every week, you just can’t gain points. Even if we were winning right now, it ain’t enough to run them down for a championship.”

It's not over, if Bowyer can chop away half of Jimmie Johnson's points lead in Phoenix this weekend, then he has a much better chance at being in the title mix. But with Brad Keseowski also in front of him in the standing, he needs more than a little help.

"We just have to do what we can do," said Michael Waltrip Racing's director of competition Scott Miller." We certainly don’t want to wish bad luck on anybody, but for us to be able to close the gap in this deal it’s going to take some good performances by us and some bad luck from both of the other two guys in front of us."

Bowyer is a good short track racer, so Phoenix is a welcome stop in that respect. But Phoenix is not one of Bowyer's better tracks, he has just two career top fives and five top tens. His average finish at the mile long track, is 17th. That isn't keeping thw 15 team from aiming high this weekend.

"Even if we aren’t able to close the deal and get the big one at the end it’d be nice to win one of these last two," said Miller. "We’ll be shooting for that. Everybody’s spirits are still high around here, so we’ll keep on showing up and trying to do our best.”
