Ryan Newman has everything that Tony Stewart has, almost. So if Smoke can win a title, why has the 39 car been so up and down? It's not that simple.
Obviously, Newman is a different driver. He has a different crew chief and try as hard as the team might, the cars are not exactly the same.
But make no mistake, Newman has the talent to win a title. Least we forget he beat out Jimmie Johnson for rookie of the year (back when that title meant something). But something is holding Newman back?
The one thing that Newman improved on greatly last season is constancy. His nine top fives and 17 top 10s is good enough to get him in the championship conversation. Now the 39 needs to kind away to win more often. Something Newman is also capable of. He lead the series in wins in 2003.
Once Newman can find that old mojo and combine it with the new found consistency, the can be a title contender. Until then 7-12 in the standings is where the 39 team will likely settle in.
