Chela Ortiz, the widow of slain Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Jerry Ortiz, kisses his nameplate which now adorns the Memorial Wall at the Sheriff's Training Academy in Whittier. Oritz was shot and killed on June 24th, 2005 and was honored Wednesday along with five other peace officers killed in 2005 along with two others from the 1920's. The 37th annual Los Angeles County Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony honored Deputy Jerry Ortiz, Deputy Pierre W. Bain, Deputy Maria C. Rosa, Officer Tommy E. Scott of the Los Angeles Airport Police, CHP Officer David M. Romero, Special Agent Supervisor William Garvey of the Department of Justices Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement and officers Marlyn F. Reed and William Sickler of the South Gate Police Department. Hundreds showed up to attend the annual event over which Sheriff Lee Baca presided.
