Angels pitcher Jered Weaver makes Letterman appearance

MINNEAPOLIS -- Angels pitcher Jered Weaver is probably too young to have a “bucket list,” but if he did, the 29-year-old right-hander would have crossed two things off it this past week.

Last Wednesday night in Anaheim, Weaver threw his first major league no-hitter, blanking the Minnesota Twins for the first individual no-hitter in Angel Stadium since Nolan Ryan in 1975.

Tuesday afternoon, Weaver reaped another reward for his gem when he presented the “Top 10” list on CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman,” filming the segment, which will air Tuesday night, in a suite next to the Target Field press box.

“I watch Dave before I go to bed when I’m home, so it’s pretty cool to be on the show,” Weaver said. “As soon as you hear Dave in your earpiece, it’s a little nerve-wracking, but it was fun. I had a lot of time to rehearse. They gave me a lot of time to go over the lines. And the teleprompter helped too.”

The “Late Show” contacted Major League Baseball the day after the no-hitter to see if Weaver could read the list, but the show had to cancel when production issues couldn’t be worked out.

Weaver was disappointed, saying he was a “big fan” of the show, but “Late Night” representatives called back on Monday, and Weaver was glad to oblige, reading the top 10 “signs you’ll never throw a no-hitter.”

Among them:

No. 7: “Your pitches tend to bounce.”

No. 6: “You spend most of the game sipping cocktails in the players’ wives section.”

No. 5: “You can only pitch when no one’s watching.”

Weaver said several of the “signs you’ll never throw a no-hitter” were changed at the last minute, including the original No. 1, which was: “You pitch for the Mets.”

“I felt bad,” Weaver said. “I couldn’t say that. I’m glad they changed that one.”

Asked where the experience ranked on Weaver’s to-do list, the pitcher said, “It’s in the top five.”
