Angels pitcher Jered Weaver throws no-hitter against Twins

Jered Weaver became the first Angels pitcher in 37 years to throw a no-hitter in Angel Stadium, the right-hander allowing just two baserunners as he blanked the Minnesota Twins in a 9-0 victory Wednesday night.

It marked the first no-hitter since Ervin Santana’s gem against the Cleveland Indians in Progressive Field last July 27 and the first in Anaheim since Nolan Ryan blanked the Baltimore Orioles, 1-0, on June 1, 1975. It was the ninth individual no-hitter in franchise history.

Weaver (4-0) struck out nine, and the closest he came to allowing a hit was a Chris Parmelee line drive that sliced just foul down the left-field line in the fifth inning. Third baseman Mark Trumbo made a nice play on Jamey Carroll’s bunt attempt in the third inning, fielding the ball and throwing to first for the out.

Jamey Carroll hit a ball to fairly deep left field to open the ninth inning, but Vernon Wells raced back toward the running track to make the catch.

With the crowd on its feet for the final inning, Weaver struck out Denard Span looking at a fastball and got Alexi Casilla to fly to the warning track in right, where Torii Hunter hauled the ball in for the final out.

Weaver’s teammates mobbed him in front of the mound, and the crowd serenaded him with chants of “Weaver! Weaver!”

Parmelee reached in the second inning when he struck out and advanced on catcher Chris Iannetta’s passed ball. Weaver issued a two-out walk to Josh Willingham in the seventh.

Weaver, who got very little run support last year and grew accustomed to having little margin for error, was given plenty of breathing room by an offense that cranked out 15 hits, including Howie Kendrick’s three-run homer in the fourth inning and Kendrys Morales’ solo shot in the third.
