Tie the Knot, LZZR Jewelry launch neckwear-inspired necklaces

Share

Tie the Knot, the neckwear brand founded in 2012 by “Modern Family” actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and now husband Justin Mikita to fund the fight for marriage equality, has partnered with L.A.-based LZZR Jewelry on a limited-edition line of necklaces.

Handmade from repurposed metals in downtown L.A., the bronze bow ties are available in two sizes, the larger, at just under 2 inches wide, hangs on a 31-inch sterling silver chain and the smaller is 1.25 inches wide and comes on a 17-inch chain. Available starting today via LZZRJewelry.com, each retails for $105 with proceeds going to groups supporting LGBTQ equality.

“While we strive to get EVERYONE in a bow tie, we are excited to have our first ever piece of jewelry for those who want to wear their bow tie in the form of this chic piece of neckwear,” Ferguson said in a statement announcing the collaboration.

That quote made me realize something about the bow-shaped neck knot at the heart of the brand: While it may make for a powerful -- and high-profile -- symbol of the marriage equality cause, there have always been two big challenges standing in the way of the bow tie’s greater pop culture popularity.

The first is the nasty learning curve required for the neckwear neophyte to properly tie one from scratch (the actor even stars in a video tutorial on the topic at thetiebar.com where the ties are sold).

The second is the fact that, the Chippendale dancer aside, properly wearing one also requires the wearing of a collared shirt.

The brand’s expansion into the bronze bow tie jewelry makes both of those hurdles so “knot” an issue.
