C’mon, give him an award

I am mystified as to why Tom Hardy’s extraordinary turn in “Legend,” in which he plays twins with contrasting personalities, has gone unrecognized by all the end-of-year awards groups as well as your Oscar prognosticators [“The Year in Review: Movies,” Dec. 13]. No other film I saw this year contained a performance that could compare to this tour-de-force.

Passionate about those ‘Bridges’

Hasn’t Margaret Gray, who wrote the review of the musical “Bridges of Madison County” [“In a State of Passion,” Dec. 14] ever heard of the words “spoiler alert”? She actually told the entire plot as if she thought none of her readers were ever going to actually see it onstage.

Yes, I happily admit being the last of the great romantics, so I was pleased when a friend invited me to join her for a Saturday matinee of “Bridges of Madison County” at the Ahmanson. It is best received by those of us who might have chosen one path over another, for only then can one truly feel a similar angst or familiar twinge of regret as does the heroine of this delicate “minor” chord presentation.

In the Sunday Calendar Feedback section [Dec. 13], Stan Evans complains about the failure of Hollywood to take on the issue of sexual abuse of children in the entertainment industry. I refer him to Amy Berg’s film “An Open Secret,” released in June; it deals with that very subject.

I just finished reading Mary McNamara’s article on presidential candidate Donald Trump [“The Fiction of the Antihero,” Dec. 13]. Should I state that it borders on hate speech?

They really know the score

I was glad to see the article on movie composers [“The Composers: Right Sound for Images”] in the Dec. 10 Envelope.

However, it is odd that the very musicians who helped make the creation being discussed a reality were all but left out of the discussion.

It would be nice to get the best studio musicians in the world, right here, some recognition for their contributions as well.
