‘Phantom of the Opera’ coming to the Egyptian, and to Blu-ray

Universal’s lavish silent film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s “The Phantom of the Opera,” starring Lon Chaney in his iconic title role and Mary Philbin, celebrates its 90th birthday this year. In honor of this milestone, the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre is screening “Phantom” on Saturday afternoon.

There’ll be live musical accompaniment of the 1925 score, and the star’s great-grandson Ron Chaney will be on hand for a post-screening discussion. On Oct. 13, Kino Lorber will release the Blu-ray of the horror classic, including the original film, as well as a 1930 re-release complete with synchronized score, effects tracks and dialogue sequences.
