The 10 best places to drink in L.A., according to Aussies

Want to take a guess which Los Angeles establishments are on the radar for Australians visiting our fair city? In the latest issue of the Australian publication Gourmet Traveller Wine, writer Matt Skinner picks his top 10 drink experiences in Los Angeles.

No surprise that Bar Covell is at the top of the list, described as oozing “warmth, confidence and charm.” A.O.C. gets the nod for daring you “to invest whatever holiday funds you have left in their 22-page internationally focused list.” Guess he didn’t have a cocktail there, which he should have.

Silverlake Wine comes in at No. 3, described as a must for its “incredible selection of wines from around the globe, uber-friendly service and a very smart interior.” Close on its heels at No. 4 is Lou Wine Shop & Tastings in Los Feliz, “a diamond in the rough. ... Owner Lou Amdur’s passion, knowledge and enthusiasm from wine is utterly infectious.”

This guy really did his homework. Next up is yet another wine shop, Bar & Garden in Culver City, “a champion of small-scale, non-interventionist winemaking.”

After that, Skinner picks a trio of restaurants: Alma, Bestia and Jon & Vinny’s. But then he could just as easily have picked a different set. There are so many L.A. restaurants with terrific wine programs.

Seven Grand gets the ninth spot for its “300-strong list of malts from around the world,” and Koreatown’s Beer Belly rounds out the top 10 for its “meticulously curated selection of craft beers ... a shining example of Koreatown’s ever-changing face.”
