Big Gay Ice Cream Upstairs now open at Upstairs Bar at Ace Hotel downtown

A permanent pop up of New York’s Big Gay Ice Cream opened at the Upstairs Bar at Ace Hotel in downtown Monday. You can now lick your wasabi pea-topped soft-serve with a sprawling view of the city.

Big Gay Ice Cream Upstairs will serve just two flavors, chocolate and sweet cream. You can order them alone, or a swirl of both. Topping options include rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, chocolate sauce, berry sauce, house granola, wasabi peas, a shot of espresso or a shot of booze.

Owners Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff also plan on opening their first ice cream parlor outside of New York on 9th Street in downtown L.A. later this year. The 1,500-square-foot store was formerly Anson’s Eatery, a sandwich shop that moved just down the street.

“Downtown has such a great feel and it isn’t as different from New York as going to Venice or even West Hollywood,” Quint told The Times earlier this year. “If you’re going to move to L.A. from New York, this is the baby-step way to do it.”

The two owners previously brought their Big Gay Ice Cream products to Los Angeles via an ice cream truck for two successful pop-ups.

Some of the signature mixes fans can look forward to at the soon-to-open location on 9th Street include the Bea Arthur cone (vanilla soft-serve, dulce de leche and crushed Nilla wafers) and the Mermaid sundae (vanilla soft-serve with Key lime curd, crushed graham crackers and whipped cream).

Quint and Petroff are also planning to release the “Big Gay Ice Cream” book with recipes next year.
