Harry Potter
"The boy who lived" is now the boy who's hunted. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) was given an assignment by Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore: Destroy the objects known as Horcruxes, which house pieces of the evil Lord Voldemort's soul. But that may have been just part of the quest as the Deathly Hallows are revealed to him. Voldemort is obsessed with killing the young wizard, and his spies and agents are on the lookout for the boy wizard.

Ron Weasley
Harry's best friend -- who's more like a brother -- and roommate is back a little bigger, a little braver and a lot more in love with Hermione Granger. Ron (Rupert Grint) knows that Harry can be a bit reckless and headstrong, but he wants to be there for his bud. Meanwhile, he knows his family is in constant danger from Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) and his minions.

Hermione Granger
The Muggle-born witch is still the smartest kid around. In this adventure, her magical prowess comes in handy. Though Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron are closer than ever, she continues to fret over Harry and is prepared to go all out to help her friend find the Horcruxes, break into Hogwarts and battle Voldemort.

Neville Longbottom
This fellow Gryffindor (Matthew Lewis) has a similar background to Harry: Raised without parents and having an undying aversion to the Dark Lord. He also has a huge heart and courage and has continuously tried to do right. The loyal friend becomes the resistance ringleader back at Hogwarts when it falls under its new headmaster's reign of terror, which includes torture by its Death Eater faculty.

Lord Voldemort
The dark wizard's mere name is taboo. The former Hogwarts student once known as Tom Riddle (Ralph Fiennes) believes that wizards should rule, and even then, pure-blood wizards are the apex. He killed Harry's parents and wishes to finish off Harry, but he also has designs on a bigger goal: to rule over all, including death itself by acquiring all the Deathly Hallows.

Bellatrix Lestrange
Bellatrix (Helena Bonham Carter) has a bit of crazy in her, mixed with a sadistic desire to hurt, destroy and kill. She's a powerful witch and one of the most steadfast followers of Voldemort and his evil ways and goes to great lengths to see that his agenda is fulfilled.

Severus Snape
Severus (Alan Rickman), who has killed Dumbledore, has been a dark cloud over Harry's life since they met as teacher and student. Now they are set up as mortal enemies despite Severus' childhood friendship with Harry's mother, Lily. Severus has taken over as headmaster at Hogwarts, but he obviously has other plans in mind ... plans that are shrouded in mystery.

The Malfoys
Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) has always been Harry's chief student rival at Hogwarts, and Draco's father, Lucius (Jason Isaacs), like Voldemort, is also a firm believer in keeping the wizarding blood lines pure. The Malfoy family home has been usurped by Voldemort as he mounts his campaign to take over everything, overtly and covertly. But the family is disgraced when Lucius fails to retrieve a coveted prophecy for the Dark Lord.

The Weasleys
Ron's parents, Arthur and Molly Weasley (Mark Williams and Julie Walters), have taken Harry under their wing. But it's a full family affair on that front. Ron's sister, Ginny (Bonnie Wright), is Harry's true love; twins George (Oliver Phelps) and Fred (James Phelps) have shifted from fun-loving businessmen to full-fledged fighters; older brothers Bill (Domhnall Gleeson) and Charlie are skilled warriors against Voldemort. Then there's Percy (Chris Rankin), whose work with the Ministry of Magic makes him the black sheep of the family -- although he isn't exactly evil.

Hogwarts professors
Under the new headmaster's regime, the once safe haven for young witches and wizards becomes compromised. Professors Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith), Horace Slughorn (James Broadbent), Filius Flitwick (Warwick Davis) and Pomona Sprout (Miriam Margolyes) are tasked with protecting the students and their magical school from the Carrows, the Dark Lord and his minions.

The wandmaker (John Hurt) remembers every wand he has sold, including Harry and Voldemort's brother wands. He is captured and tortured by the Dark Lord in order to share the secrets of the Elder Wand, one of the Deathly Hallows that turns into Voldemort's obsession. Ollivander is cared for by Bill Weasley (Domhnall Gleeson)and his wife, Fleur Delacour (Clemence Poesy).

Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) and Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena) keep vigilant; Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) and Kingsley Shacklebolt (George Harris) continue the fight.

The Golden Snitch
Albus Dumbledore willed three things to Harry, Hermione and Ron upon his unexpected death at the hands of Severus Snape in "The Half-Blood Prince": Harry received a Quidditch Snitch; Ron, a Deluminator (a lighter that turns on and off all lights); and Hermione, an original copy of the wizard children's book "The Tales of Beedle the Bard." The secret to opening the Snitch is revealed in the final film.

These mostly harmless objects (a diary, a locket, a ring and more) were used by Voldemort to store pieces of his dark soul, ensuring that he would be hard to kill. The objects project a sinister presence, especially Nagini the snake, and can magically defend themselves from all who come after them. It is the central mission for Harry, Hermione and Ron to find and destroy these objects.

Horcrux killers
Only a few magical items can destroy a Horcrux. Harry Potter and friends have been using the goblin-wrought sword of Godric Gryffindor to annihilate the dark objects, though Harry was also able to destroy Tom Riddle's diary with a tooth from an evil basilisk snake in "The Chamber of Secrets."
