Grant Morrison and Brian Taylor to adapt ‘Brave New World’ for Syfy

Comic book great Grant Morrison and “Crank” co-writer-director Brian Taylor have been tapped to adapt Aldous Huxley’s dystopian classic “Brave New World” for Syfy.

Set in 2540 London, “Brave New World” depicts a society where natural reproduction has been abolished and people are instead born and raised in hatcheries and conditioning centers. In this future, children are educated through sleep-learning, individuality and initiative are shunned, recreational drug use and sex are encouraged and the population is programmed to accept its station in life. A life that of course comes with a predetermined expiration date.

One of Huxley’s most notable works, “Brave New World” is considered one of the greatest novels of the 20th century.

Morrison is known for penning adventures of fan-favorite heroes including Batman, Superman and the Flash as well as for his creator-owned series “The Invisibles.” In addition to writing and directing the “Crank” films (with Mark Neveldine), Taylor also co-wrote the screenplay for “Jonah Hex” (2010) and co-directed “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” (2012).

Universal Cable Productions and Syfy haven’t announced whether “Brave New World” will be an ongoing series or a miniseries. Morrison and Taylor will also serve as executive producers for the adaptation along with Amblin Television Co-Presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.

Syfy has also announced an adaptation of Morrison and Darick Robertson’s graphic novel “Happy!” Morrison and Taylor co-wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producers. Taylor is also attached to direct.

Described as a “grimy black comedy,” “Happy!” follows Nick Sax, a drunk, corrupt, ex-cop-turned-hit-man who is a bit down on his luck when a tiny, imaginary, blue winged horse named Happy comes into his life and changes it forever.
