‘Jurassic World’ sequel may be set off-island

It looks like the dinosaurs may be growing out of their island habitat.

The “Jurassic World” sequel will not be “just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island,” director Colin Trevorrow told Wired. While the title and plot of the film have yet to be announced, Trevorrow is set to write the sequel film with Derek Connolly (however, he is currently not attached to direct).

Trevorrow, it seems, is interested in exploring the science behind these dinosaurs in applications beyond that for a theme park. This is already hinted at in “Jurassic World,” with Hoskins (played by Vincent D’Onofrio) interested in weaponizing the dinosaurs.

What would be new, however, is if groups outside of InGen get a hold of the technology that has enabled the corporation to engineer dinosaurs.

“[T]his isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in [“Jurassic World”] ... is: What if this went open source?,” said Trevorrow. “What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?”

While the spirit of Dr. Hammond may have kept InGen’s focus on the entertainment prospects of their dinosaur creations, what avenues will others explore with this technology?

Trevorrow’s belief that dinosaurs chasing people on an island could “get old real fast” is also an idea he hints at in “Jurassic World.”

The reason the Indominus rex is even created is because the general public is no longer impressed by just having dinosaurs in a theme park. How long, then, will movie audiences be impressed by movies that just have dinosaurs chasing people in a theme park when things go wrong?

Although, with “Jurassic World” grossing more than $1.5 billion worldwide, the appetite for these dinosaur films is definitely there.

Of course, leaving Isla Nublar, home to the original dinosaur theme park in “Jurassic Park” and the revamped version of “Jurassic World,” is not a new concept. Both “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic Park III” center on dinosaurs living on Isla Sorna, the abandoned island where the dinosaurs were initially engineered and nurtured.

“The Lost World” even leaves the island setting, bringing a Tyrannosaurus rex to San Diego for a new theme park. The plan, of course, leads to a dinosaur rampage on the mainland. A slightly more “King Kong” take on the “Jurassic World” franchise.

The ideas Trevorrow is interested in exploring for the “Jurassic World” sequel are definitely intriguing, but fans have a long wait for the follow-up film, which is scheduled for a June 22, 2018, release. Read the full interview at Wired.
