Sorry, ‘Mindy’ fans: Kaling’s book with B.J. Novak won’t be sexy tell-all

“The Office” actors Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are working on a book together, but contary to earlier reports, it won’t be a “sexy” tell-all memoir, according to “The Mindy Project” star Kaling.

The comedian and writer took to social media yesterday to deny rumors that the book would be about the actors’ “off-and-on romance,” as the New York Daily News claimed last week.

The newspaper reported that the comic actors, both of whom have published books before, would be paid $7.5 million by Random House for the book. “[B]oth appear ready to rent [their] relationship for an enormous windfall,” the newspaper wrote.

Kaling didn’t discuss the payment in her posts, but did say that the book won’t be an intimate account of their relationship. On Facebook, Kaling wrote, “I heard somewhere it was a tell-all which I actually found exciting, because that sounds sexy and I grew up looking like a little fat boy. But it’s not a tell-all. What I CAN tell you it will be super cool and funny and even better than that. For now we are researching.”

The post is accompanied by an image from the children’s book “Frog and Toad Together,” featuring the titular characters eating cookies. “Here is a cool pic of us working at my house,” Kaling explained.

Kaling also posted the picture on Twitter, adding, “I swear I’m not trying to be mysterious! We are just starting work on it.”

Neither actor is a stranger to the publishing industry. Kaling is the author of a memoir, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns),” and a forthcoming essay collection, “Why Not Me?” Her character on “The Mindy Project,” Mindy Lahiri, was named after Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri.

Novak has written the best-selling short story collection, “One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories,” and a children’s book, “The Book with No Pictures.”
