Emile Hirsch, charged with felony assault, checked into rehab

Actor Emile Hirsch checked into rehab for alcohol abuse days after he allegedly assaulted a Paramount Pictures executive at the Sundance Film Festival, according to his attorney, Robert Offer.

This announcement comes one day after Hirsch was formally charged with a felony in Utah for the alleged assault.

Hirsch, 29, best known for his roles in “Into the Wild” and “Lone Survivor,” was extremely drunk during the alleged altercation and has no memory of the event, Offer said in a statement.

“However, Emile takes these allegations very seriously, and is devastated that any of this has occurred,” according to the statement. “A few days after the incident, Emile sought help and checked himself into an alcohol rehabilitation facility, where he remains today, to ensure nothing like this ever happens again.”

The incident occurred Jan. 25 in Park City, Utah, at Tao Nightclub at Sundance, when Hirsch allegedly put Paramount’s Daniele Bernfeld in a chokehold after calling her a “rich kid” and telling her she did not belong at the festival, according to the criminal complaint filed by the Summit County Attorney’s Office.

Bernfeld, vice president of Paramount Digital Entertainment and Insurge Pictures, told police she was dragged across a table while in the chokehold, at which point Hirsch fell on top of her, according to the complaint.

Bernfeld told authorities that she nearly or briefly lost consciousness, according to the complaint.

Hirsch is scheduled to make his first court appearance March 16, according to the Associated Press.
