The MTV Movie Awards welcomed arriving celebrities onto a red carpet that’s actually blue Sunday evening at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. And in the spirit of breaking from convention, while talent from the network’s TV shows like “Teen Mom” and “Faking It” were crowd favorites, musical talent stood out as much as the actors.

R&B songstress Tinashe wowed in a floor-lengthy black gown with pearl embellishment. On the blue carpet, ahead of her performance with Charli XCX and rapper Ty Dolla $ign, she revealed her pre-performance ritual.

“I just really like to chill and have a good time and play some music,” she said.

Her song of choice: “As long as it’s ratchet, it’ll work.”

Although the night is about movies, Tinashe was not up to speed with the nominees — though at this show, winners are secondary to what happens on stage. Ty Dolla $ign said he was just happy to be performing.

“I can’t believe I’m here,” he said, smiling, adding that he was looking forward to hearing Kevin Hart, who will receive the Comedic Genius Award.

Willow Shields, whose film “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1” is nominated for movie of the year, took a break from competing on “Dancing With the Stars” to walk the blue carpet. With the series wrapping (“Mockingjay — Part 2), she said she’s thankful for the fans.

“Looking back on the first movie, the fandom we’ve built is insane. They’ve been so supportive.”
