Director Bryan Singer to take on Heinlein’s ‘Moon Is a Harsh Mistress’
Bryan Singer is taking a trip to the moon.
The “X-Men” filmmaker is on board to direct “Uprising,” a movie based on Robert A. Heinlein’s sci-fi novel “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress,” The Times has confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
Singer is to work from a screenplay written by Marc Guggenheim (“Green Lantern,” “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”).
Published in 1966, “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress” tells the story of a lunar colony’s rebellion against Earth organized by a computer technician, a political agitator, an academic and a sentient supercomputer. With its combination of technological imagination, politics, humor and action, Heinlein’s book won a Hugo Award and was nominated for a Nebula Award.
If history is any indication, Singer and Guggenheim could have their work cut out for them. Two previous attempts have been made to bring “Mistress” to the big screen, by DreamWorks and Phoenix Pictures, to no avail. The rights eventually reverted to Heinlein’s estate, from which Fox recently acquired them.
Other works of Heinlein’s have also been adapted to the big screen, including the novel “Starship Troopers” and the short story “All You Zombies,” which was made into “Predestination.”
