‘Fantastic Four’ trailer glimpses younger, darker superhero revamp

It’s not clobberin’ time just yet, but the first trailer for Fox’s “Fantastic Four” reboot has been unveiled, giving moviegoers an introductory glimpse of director Josh Trank’s take on the iconic Marvel superhero team.

Set for release Aug. 7, the new “F4” stars a who’s who of up-and-comers: Miles Teller as the elastic genius Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara as the elusive Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan as the incendiary Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Jamie Bell as the craggy bruiser Ben Grimm/Thing.

In an era when some superhero movies get teasers two years out, Fox, Trank and writer-producer Simon Kinberg have been playing it pretty close to the vest with “Fantastic Four.” The new teaser (watch it above) doesn’t give much away, but it does suggest that the film will have a darker tone and a harder sci-fi edge than Fox’s 2005 and 2007 outings with Chris Evans and Jessica Alba.

The two-minute clip opens with a voice-over asking, “How did we get this far? Human beings have an immeasurable desire to discover, to invent, to build.” (The voice, by the way, sounds like Reg E. Cathey, who plays Johnny and Sue’s father.)

As the central quartet suit up for some interdimensional travel, the music turns ominous and the voiceover warns, “But with every new discovery, there is risk, there is sacrifice, and there are consequences.”

For Reed and the gang, those consequences would seem to include surviving a harrowing mission, coping with newfound superpowers and eventually battling a former friend turned enemy — presumably Toby Kebbell’s incarnation of Dr. Droom, who’s not explicitly shown in the trailer.

Only time will tell how “Chronicle” helmer Trank’s reimagining of the quartet resonates with moviegoers, but Fox has high hopes for the franchise. A sequel is already on the calendar for summer 2017.
