‘Dear White People,’ ‘Imitation Game’ are among GLAAD nominees

Share

The LGBT media advocacy organization GLAAD named the nominees for its annual GLAAD Media Awards on Wednesday, announcing 31 categories (English and Spanish–language) for the fair and accurate inclusion of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues affecting their lives.

Among the nominees for outstanding film in wide release is “The Imitation Game,” which chronicles the work of gay mathematician Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) working to crack the Nazi code during World War II. The film is nominated along with “Love Is Strange,” “The Skeleton Twins,” “Tammy” and “Pride.”

In the category of outstanding film in limited release, director Justin Simien’s “Dear White People,” starring Tyler James Williams as a black, gay student journalist, is nominated. Recognized in the same category are “Life Partners,” “Lilting,” “The Way He Looks” and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.”

British crooner Sam Smith, who is nominated for six Grammys this year, is listed in the music artist category with rapper Angel Haze, singer Mary Lambert, the group Against Me! and folk singer Mary Gauthier.

The increased depiction of transgender people across media platforms was apparent in the GLAAD announcement, including Time’s cover story “The Transgender Tipping Point” (a magazine article nominee) featuring actress and transactivist Laverne Cox, and Amazon’s “Transparent” (a TV comedy series nominee). Also highlighting the trans community are Cox’s documentary “The T Word” and AOL Originals’ documentary “True Trans with Laura Jane Grace.”

The GLAAD Media Awards will hold two ceremonies, one for each coast. The Los Angeles ceremony is March 21, and the New York one is May 9.
