‘Jem and the Holograms’ tunes up for October 2015 release

“Jem and the Holograms” has booked its big gig.

The live-action movie based on Hasbro’s 1980s animated series about a young woman who leads a double life as a rock star will hit theaters Oct. 23, 2015, Universal Pictures announced Thursday.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (“Step Up 2,” “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never”) from a screenplay by Ryan Landels, “Jem” is to tell the story of a small-town girl who catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, with a little help from her three sisters.

The film stars Aubrey Peeples (TV’s “Nashville”) in the lead role, with Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau and Hayley Kiyoko portraying bandmates in the Holograms. In making the movie, the filmmakers encouraged fans to contribute creative input and submit audition videos over the Internet.

Along with scheduling “Jem,” Universal also set the horror movie “Cybernatural” for release April 10.

Directed by Levan Gabriadze and conceived by Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted,” “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”), “Cybernatural” unfolds over a teenager’s computer screen as she and her friends are stalked by a mysterious figure.
